Coolclogher House provides the perfect holiday accommodation for
a Golfing Holiday in Ireland.
Ireland is a golf adventurers dream, with over 400 Golf Courses
throughout the length and breadth of the country to choose from.
At Coolclogher House the dedicated Golfer can enjoy an unforgettable
round of golf at one of the numerous 18 hole and Championship Golf
Courses which are within easy driving distance.
The wonderful natural beauty of Co Kerry provides a stunning backdrop
to many of the courses detailed below - but beware, with such breathtaking
scenery all around, it can be difficult to keep your eye on the
ball!
Golf
has been played in Killarney since 1891, originally on a nine hole
inland course. Then in 1930 it was expanded to an 18 hole course.
The expansion brought the course to the lakeside and added outstanding
beauty.
Killeen
The flagship of Killarney's three courses, this is truly one of
the greatest courses in the country. At 6474 metres it will certainly
challenge the longest of hitters and with water on almost every
hole accuracy is essential. Killeen played host to the Carroll's
Irish Open in both 1991 and 1992, and proved to be a stern test
for the Pro's. For the 1991 Carroll's Irish Open, only three players
finished under par for the tournament.
Mahony's Point
Killarney's second superb course, situated beside the famous Lakes
of Killarney, is a good test for golfers of all skill levels. At
6164 metres it is the shortest of the three courses, but with a
combination of well undulated greens, well positioned bunkers and
water hazards, wayward shots may find big trouble.
Lackabane
The latest addition to the Club, this course is still in its infancy
but is already proving to be quite a challenge. At 6410 metres it
is of championship standards and the design is fantastic. With lakes
and streams running through the course, it adds to the beauty and
also adds a lot of danger to crooked shots.
Representing the first European design of Arnold Palmer, Tralee
Golf Club in southwestern Ireland is one of the most spectacularly
beautiful golf courses you will ever encounter. And while beauty
often masks certain deficiencies in a golf course, that is certainly
not the case with Tralee. Having completed his masterpiece, Palmer
commented: "I have never come across a piece of land so ideally
suited for the building of a golf course. I am happy that we have
one of the world's great links here".
This is a unique championship standard 9 hole course, only 5 minutes
walk from Coolclogher House. A truly spectacular setting with mountains,
lakes, woodland, Ross Castle and Flesk River. Affiliated to the
Golfing Union of Ireland and with professional tuition available,
Ross Golf Club is the ideal setting to play a relaxed round of golf
and meet some of the locals. Refreshments are available all day
and there are clubs and caddy cars for hire.
Set
among 200 year old trees, 12th century castle ruins, fairy lios
and rolling hills, Beaufort Golf Course is designed for all golfers
and is within 15 minutes of Coolclogher House.
The course presents magnificent views of the McGillycuddy Reeks
from all points. Carved from natural terrain, every hole offers
the golfer fair but demanding shots with lake, mature trees and
deep bunkers penalising the wayward. Special features on this par
71 Championship course are the multiple tee boxes, generous fairways,
large contoured greens, and Castle Core which dominates the back
nine is an integral part of this challenge.
Described
by one enthusiast as 'The Hope Diamond' on the Ring of Kerry, this
course was the dream of Irish American Jack Mulcahy. Designed by
Irelands pre-eminent golf architect, Eddie Hackett, Waterville has
achieved status as 'one of the best' in only 25 years. The 14th
and 18th holes were selected by Christy O'Connor in his all-Ireland
greatest 18. From the 17th tee you have spectacular views of the
course, the bay, the sea and the distant mountains. Every hole is
distinct with not a weak one to be found among them.
The Old Course
Located
on the Shannon estuary, it is a true seaside links course, virtually
treeless and a course of sharp contours throughout. There appears
to be no man- made influence. It looks like a course laid out on
land back in the 10th century where there is a wild look to the
place with long grass covering the dunes that pitch and roll throughout
the course making it very intimidating. Yet the course is eminently
fair. While there would appear to be a lot of blind shots, there
aren’t. Even where there are blind shots, you are given a good idea
where you must hit the ball. The course doesn’t fool you altogether!
The Cashen Course
From
the moment that you shoot out of the funnel at the 1st right, up
until your final drive over a wasteland, and thence to the magnificent
finish of the elevated 18th green, you will have traversed a quite
incredible golf course. Many of the green surfaces, traps and contours
have been created by nature, no architect could have designed better.
There is no more natural a golf hole in the world than the 10th,
an outrageously beautiful stretch of God-given terrain but many
will consider the 13th to be the most spectacular hole on the course.
From the landing area you will be looking at perhaps the most superb
green-site that has been conceived. As for the par fives, their
length and challenge is matched only by their stunning beauty.
As
one of Kerry's foremost golfing experiences, the Ring of Kerry Golf
Club sits majestically overlooking spectacular Kenmare Bay. This
18 hole, par-71 world-class, golf course nestles between the towering
majesty of the MacGillycuddy Reeks and the Caha mountains and enjoys
an unspoilt view of one of the most panoramic scenes to be found
on any golf course in Ireland.
Designed as a 'world class' golf course you will find the course
sufficiently flexible to challenge competent and experienced players
from the back teeing areas, yet capable of being played and enjoyed
by the average handicap player from middle and forward teeing areas.
The course is also of a standard capable of hosting smaller professional
golf events, both Irish and European.
