performances and has presented this important aspect of Irish cultural
life all over the world. A full programme of events is scheduled

Writers' Week Listowel is now firmly established as Ireland's leading
literary festival. It prides itself on the fact that many of the
current galaxy of best selling Irish authors began their first tentative
steps at developing their writing skills at the workshops in Listowel.
Writers' Week strives to involve all - writers, poets, singers,
storytellers, children, visitors and locals. The town assumes a
carnival atmosphere with poetry, singing, dancing and drama resounding
through the streets and pubs.
The Guinness Jazz Festival takes place in Cork in the last weekend
in October each year - this is a holiday weekend in Ireland. Around
40,000 visitors flood into Cork for the festival each year making
it one of the largest art events in Ireland and the friendliest
jazz festival in Europe.
Over the years, the Festival has featured many of the 'greats'
of jazz including Art Blakey, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie,
Wynton Marsalis, Sonny Rollins, Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, Gerry
Mulligan, Dave Brubeck to name but a few.
A celebration of Irish Music, Song and Dance, while enjoying the
finest of Irish fare in the company of The Lord and Lady of Killarney,
their household and guests. A corporate and incentive event venue
with a difference!
Each August the streets of Tralee pulse with festivity; music from
ballad and folk singers; brass bands; free fun and games in streets
and parks; parades and civic ceremonies. This is Ireland´s
largest ´bash´, the astonishing Rose of Tralee Festival,
when the town plays host to the world.
The centrepiece is the Rose Competition itself, in which young
women of Irish birth or ancestry take part in a unique selection
contest for the coveted title of ´Rose of Tralee´.
"The Irish Rose" is also the subject of a love song "The
Rose of Tralee", written in 1800’s by C. Mordaunt Spencer.
The song is said to be based on the story of Mary O’ Connor and
her sweetheart, a young soldier sent to fight abroad in the British
Army, who arrived home from the wars hoping to marry her, only to
see her coffin being carried to the grave yard - a tragic victim
of an early death.
Killorglin
is the venue each year for one of Ireland's most unusual street
festivals -The Puck Fair, where the coronation of a wild male goat
by a young girl is one of the most striking features of this three-day
event.
The fair, which is one of Ireland's oldest and longest celebrated,
is held without fail on 10th, 11th and 12th August every year with
12 hours of free family street entertainment. The three days of
Puck Fair are known as Gathering Day, Middle Day, and Scattering
Day.
The Puck Fair takes its name from the male goat who presides over
the festival. A wild creature caught solely for this purpose, he
is proclaimed "The Puck King of Ireland" on Gathering
Day and is released back into the wild on Scattering Day, possibly
to be caught again the next year.
The main events of the festival include a traditional horse fair,
the Guinness busking competition, a parade and the coronation ceremony
of King Puck, open air night concerts, a fireworks display, children's
competitions, street entertainers and dancing displays.
